I got a  note and picture from the owners of the KHSD 26 Wisp. John Mottl sent this nice picture.   They did a 35 day cruise this last summer.  I once got to borrow one of these 26s for a few weeks.  I remember literally sailing circles around a Cross 35 as I was talking to them on it.

During the last trip to Hawaii I got to see Elua. This was my first composite design. It was 1987 if I remember correctly. It looks pretty good for what, 24 years of continuous use? Back then I had just come from a MACM composites conference and was going to do the beams like  Ron Reichard’s Fury structural work. At that time Fleury Michon had broken up. The builder convinced the owners that Fury was Fleury and Reichard, and by extension, I, were not to be trusted.  The beams were then designed by an Australian guy who wandered by the shop.  They did keep my bow beam design.  It’s rolled aluminum.  The cat does look good still.

I got to rental car shop last week on Maui. They ask if my trip is work or play. I just then noticed and pointed to my Alii Nui 65 design on the cover of their magazine, “that one, both”.

Earthwise Ventures was one of 13 recipients out of 700 entries of the African Diaspora Marketplace grant for it’s ferry project on Lake Victoria.  The dream is to have them completely built over there.  See also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKJboIBNauM

Yesterday I met with Trilogy Excursions. They have 3 KHSD charter catamarans. All of them have some modifications. Of course I think the originals were better, but what do you do?  The oldest one, in foam/glass, has been going out every day since 1988.

I’m catching with some of the KHSD cats on Maui this week. I’ve been very impressed with the 65′ Alii Nui. Everything seems to have been done right. See http://www.aliinuimaui.com/
Interesting fact. At 21 knots powering she is only using 56% of throttle. She is also on the cover of the Avis and Budget rental car magazines. While there is a new Constant Camber cat owned by competitor; and it looks more like one of mine than any previous, it looks frumpy and poorly detailed in comparison. In my opinion.
I forgot the cable between camera and computer, so pictures have to wait until I get back, except this that I stole off the site.  I’m sure Jeff doesn’t mind.
